SNIPPET SERIAL: PEOPLE-002
It's the people, not the AI — Robot Crimes
THE INSIDE STORY · FILED FROM THE WIRE DESK

The machine didn't wire the money. A person did.

For the first time in nearly 25 years, the FBI's 2024 Internet Crime Report gave artificial intelligence its own file. The number that got the headlines: $893 million lost to AI-enabled fraud, across 22,364 complaints. Voice clones. Fake profiles. Forged IDs. Deepfaked faces of your boss and your kids.

Here's the part nobody put on the front page. That same year, Americans lost $16 billion to internet crime across 859,532 complaints. Do the arithmetic the panic skips: AI was 5.6% of the dollars and 2.6% of the complaints. The other 94% was the oldest racket there is — a human running a con. And the AI slice? A person still had to press send.

Where the $16 billion went (2024)

AI-enabled fraud is one dollar in eighteen. The rest is human hustle.

Reported losses, in billions

Old-fashioned crypto & investment cons dwarf the AI file.

AI didn't get greedy. AI didn't feel the pressure, pick up the phone, or spend the money. People did — they just found a sharper mask. Blame the tool if it makes you feel better. We'll keep naming the hand that held it.

It's the people, not the AI.
